Section 47 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, addresses the effect of a promise not to do something that forms the consideration for the promise. According to this section, where a person has promised not to do a thing which he was not under any obligation to do, the promise is void, unless the promisee has given something in exchange for the promise.
