Where any document required to be registered under section 17 is presented for registration, the registrar shall, on payment of the fee prescribed, register the document and shall, on the same day, or, if the document is presented for registration after the close of the office hours on any day, on the next following day, enter a note in the register of such document, stating the date on which it was presented for registration, and the date on which it was registered, and shall also enter in the index a note of the date on which the document was registered.
