Section 4 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, states that 'The maker of a promissory note must sign it. The signature may be in the name only of the person signing, or in the name of the person signing and of some other person or persons added thereto, but nothing in this section shall affect the validity of a promissory note made or endorsed in the name of a firm, if the firm is one in which the person signing is a partner.' The section further explains that 'A promissory note may be made payable to two or more persons, whether they are all alive at the date of the note, jointly, or to the order of one or some of them at the date of the note, and whether they are all alive at such date or not.'
