Section 26 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 states that 'the drawee of a bill of exchange is discharged from liability, if the holder of the bill has failed to give notice of dishonor to the drawee, or if the holder has failed to sue the drawee within a reasonable time. The drawee is also discharged from liability if the bill has been paid by the drawer, or if the bill has been satisfied by the delivery of goods or the performance of services. The drawee may also be discharged from liability if the holder of the bill has made a material alteration to the bill, or if the holder has failed to comply with the conditions of the bill.
