Whenever any person is convicted of an offence for which the Court has power to sentence him to imprisonment, and is of opinion that such person should be kept in solitary confinement, the Court may pass a sentence of imprisonment with reference to the scale specified in section 73, and may, by the sentence, direct that the offender shall be kept in solitary confinement for such portion or portions of the imprisonment, as the Court shall think fit, not exceeding one month in the whole, or, where the imprisonment exceeds three months, three months in the whole.
