Section 117 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, states: 'When two or more persons have made a joint promise, a demand for performance may be made from, or notice of non-performance given to, any one, or more, of the joint promisors, and any one of the joint promisors may be compelled to perform the whole of the promise.' This section clarifies that any one of the joint promisors can be compelled to perform the entire promise. However, the other joint promisors have the right to contribution from the person who has performed the promise. Judicial interpretations have emphasized that the liability of joint promisors is joint and several.
