This Act may be called the Indian Contract Act, 1872. It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir and it shall come into force on the first day of September, 1872. The Indian Contract Act, 1872 is a comprehensive piece of legislation that governs contracts in India. It lays down the general principles of contract law, including the formation of contracts, the capacity of parties to contract, the free consent of parties, the consideration, the legality of the object, and the performance of contracts.
