Statutory Content of Section 1

This Act may be called the Transfer of Property Act, 1882. It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir. It shall come into force on the first day of July, 1882. In this Act, unless there is anything repugnant in the subject or context, "transfer of property" means an act by which a living person conveys property, in present or in future, to one or more other living persons, or to himself/herself, or to himself and one or more other living persons, in present or in future. The term "property of a person" includes all such rights and interests in or over property in India as he is entitled to enjoy, whether jointly with others or in separate ownership.
