When the maker or drawer of any bill of exchange, hundi or cheque has placed thereon any signature in token of his having accepted or drawn the same, or when any such bill, hundi or cheque has been altered by erasure, obliteration or otherwise, so as to become a different instrument, the burden of proving that the signature so placed is not the signature of the maker or drawer, or that the bill, hundi or cheque has not been altered by him, shall be upon the person who denies that the signature is the signature of the maker or drawer or that the bill, hundi or cheque has not been altered by him.
