When the holder of a negotiable instrument has himself endorsed it without obtaining the endorsement of any party prior to him, the burden of proving that such prior party did not sign the instrument as an endorser shall be on the holder. Where the instrument has been materially altered after the signature of the maker or the drawer, the burden of proving that the alteration was made with the consent of the maker or the drawer shall be on the holder. Where the maker or the drawer or an endorser of the instrument is deceased, the burden of proving that the instrument was not given after his death shall be on the holder.
