An arbitrator may be challenged if circumstances exist that give rise to justifiable doubts as to the arbitrator's impartiality or independence. A party may challenge an arbitrator by submitting to the arbitral tribunal a written statement of the reasons relied upon for the challenge. The arbitral tribunal shall hear the party making the challenge and any other party concerned, and shall decide on the challenge. The arbitral tribunal may also, on its own initiative, consider whether there are any grounds for challenging an arbitrator. The arbitral tribunal shall decide on the challenge within thirty days from the date of the challenge. The decision of the arbitral tribunal on the challenge shall be final and binding on the parties. Where an arbitrator is challenged, the arbitral tribunal may continue to sit and conduct the arbitration, unless the challenge is sustained. Where the challenge is sustained, the arbitrator shall be replaced by a new arbitrator in accordance with the procedure for the appointment of arbitrators.
